What will they say about 2020?
The whole thing is a complete catastrophe wherever you live. For those living in the UK, we have been under the thumb of the government since 23rd March. Lockdown measures have been lifted in phases and us golfing folk achieved our biggest win since King James IV lifted the golf ban in 1502, when ‘golfing lockdown’ was lifted on 13th May.
At first it was 2-balls and now it is 4-balls. Rakes are missing from bunkers, bookings have to be made for driving range sessions and the holes themselves have theses funny little contraptions on them to limit flag fondling.
COVID-19 has impacted golf tremendously but golfers are stubborn and inextricably keen. DIY back garden practice nets/bed sheets were erected and kitchen windows broken from amateur shanks.
Golf clubs experienced an unprecedented influx of play when the courses opened for business, with GOLFNOW traffic hitting a peak of 25,000 users in a single day with a total of 90,826 visitors in the ‘reopening’ week. This was a 681% increase in sessions, year on year and smashed the previous record of 34,777.
As I write, it has been 8 weeks and I have played 19 rounds of golf. 12 rounds at Foxhills, 4 at Sunningdale, 2 at The Berkshire and 1 at Royal Cinque ports. Quite a prestigious mix I know.
I could write about every one of those rounds but I don’t really want to and I don’t know if you would want to read it! My game is coming together after around 3 months off before lockdown. I need to resume the lessons and improve my discipline in my practice. Not to mention try and play competitive golf, which is a whole other story.
